Why I Became a Home Inspector

Home inspection license, Justin Taggart

I’m Justin (JD) Taggart, and I am the proud owner of Taggart Inspections. I’m excited to share my journey with you and tell you all about my passion for creating safe and efficient homes. As a licensed, certified, and insured home inspector, I strive to provide top-notch services to help homeowners and prospective buyers make informed decisions. With my extensive background in construction and a commitment to ongoing learning, I am dedicated to ensuring that your home is a place of comfort, security, and peace of mind. So, let’s dive in and discover how my experience in building science led me to become a trusted home inspector.

My Background in Construction:

A Well-Rounded Education

I kick-started my career with a bachelor’s degree in Construction Systems Management. This comprehensive program provided me with a solid foundation in various aspects of construction, including metalwork, concrete, electrical systems, plumbing, framing, surveying, safety protocols, engineering principles, drafting, scheduling, estimating, and more. Armed with this knowledge, I gained a well-rounded understanding of the science behind different construction systems. From learning about proper bracing techniques to understanding the optimal temperatures for concrete curing, my education equipped me with the necessary skills to tackle complex construction projects.

Hands-On Experience

While my formal education laid the groundwork, I knew that hands-on experience would truly enrich my understanding of the construction industry. So, after college, I eagerly took on numerous side jobs to gain practical knowledge and sharpen my skills. From building custom oak bars to finishing basements and even tackling drywall repairs, I embraced the opportunity to manage both small and large-scale projects. I took on the majority of the work myself, allowing me to gain firsthand knowledge of the tools required and the importance of following manufacturer specifications to ensure high-quality results. This invaluable experience also shed light on the shortcuts some contractors may take, emphasizing the importance of doing the job right the first time.

Expanding My Expertise

As my reputation grew within the construction industry, I was referred to a job that would forever change my perspective. This opportunity exposed me to the intricate world of building science, focusing on making homes safe and energy-efficient. I found my calling in this field and made a commitment to continuously learn and grow professionally. With each inspection, I strive to leverage my expertise and training to provide you with a thorough assessment of your home’s condition.

Home Inspection Services:

Your Home, My Expertise

Now, I am proud to offer my experience and training to assist others. Whether you are in the process of buying a home or already own one, I can help you understand the true condition of your property through a comprehensive home inspection. By conducting a visual observation of the readily accessible areas of your home, I can identify defects, maintenance items, and potential future problems that may impact your investment. My goal is to provide you with a clear understanding of your home’s condition and empower you to make informed decisions.

In addition to thorough home inspections, I offer a range of additional services that can complement your inspection and provide a more comprehensive understanding of your home. These services include:

  • Water Testing: Recommended for rural homes to ensure water quality.
  • Energy Assessment: Identifies insulation levels, air leakage, and provides appliance information for comparison to the 2021 International Energy Efficiency Code.
  • Termite (WDO) Inspection: Highly recommended to detect termite activity, especially in older homes where they are prevalent.
  • Radon Testing: Identifies the presence of radon, a radioactive gas that can be harmful to your health.
  • Mold Testing: A mold air sample test or mold tape lift test is a simple and effective way to detect mold in your indoor air.
